RETABLOS

Retablos are a traditional Spanish art form dating back to the late 18th century. Artist would use natural pigments to paint devotional images on carved wood pieces. Here, I cut and carve pieces from pine wood and lay coatings of gesso which creates a smooth white canvas on the wood. I then paint with watercolors and natural pigments. The pieces are then varnished with hand collected pine sap, waxed, and prepped for hanging. Throughout the years I have painted traditional images of saints, here is some of the work I have produced.
